How will the ban be enforced?
Instructions will be given to Internet service providers to block these apps, for which they are expected to send notifications soon. Users can get a message soon, in which it will be said that access to apps is banned at the request of the government.

However, while this will affect apps such as TicketTock and UC News that require a live feed for any action, users can still continue to use apps that do not require an active Internet connection to use. But in the coming time, the download number of apps like CamScanner can be removed from Google Play Store and Apple Store. What will be the effect of ban?

This is a list of 59 banned apps.

What is the legal basis for India’s action?
The Union Ministry of Information Technology stated that Section 69A of the Information Technology Act (IT Act) and related provisions of Information Technology (Procedure and Safeguards for Blocking of Access of Information by Public) Rules 2009 gives it powers to ban foreign apps. .

Explain that in the notification issued by the Center, according to the information available, these apps are involved in such activities, which are harmful to India’s defense, security, sovereignty and integrity. The Center said that these apps will not be used in mobile and non-mobile based internet devices as well.

The Ministry of Information Technology said that complaints it received from several sources included reports of misuse of some mobile apps available on Android and iOS platforms. It has been said that these apps steal the users’ data and send it to the servers outside India in an unauthorized manner. Collecting, examining and profiling these data on behalf of elements hostile to India’s national security is a threat to India’s sovereignty and integrity. Emergency measures were needed to prevent this. At the same time, the Cyber Crime Coordination Center under the Ministry of Home Affairs also recommended a ban on such apps.

Will the ban be permanent?
Last year, Tiktok was banned in India on the order of Madras High Court for a few days, but it came back soon after the court lifted the ban. While these actions are more widespread, affect more applications, and are taken into account in a specific strategic and national security context. This can be a warning to large Chinese businesses in India and to China itself.
