Share Market Today: Sensex and Nifty showed ups and downs after ups and downs

Share Market Today: There was a tug of war between the bulls and bears in the stock markets today. Benchmark indices ended the day marginally higher as the Reserve Bank (RBI) raised the interest rate by 50 basis points to 5.4 per cent and kept the GDP forecast at 7.2 per cent. UltraTech and Bharti Airtel were among the top gainers today.

Overall, the S&P BSE Sensex touched a high of 58,649 and a low of 58,244 within a band of 405 points during the day. The index closed 89 points or 0.15 per cent higher at 58,388. On the other hand, Nifty 50 (Nifty) closed at 17,397 with a gain of 16 points or 0.09 percent.

In the broader market, BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices rose up to 0.2 per cent. Among sectors, the Nifty Auto index fell over 1 per cent. On the other hand, the Nifty IT index gained 0.6 per cent. Manappuram Finance posted its biggest intra-day gain in recent days, surging nearly 10 per cent. Meanwhile, shares of State Bank of India were up 1.5 per cent and were seen moving towards a new all-time high.

Automobile major Bajaj Auto and realty player DLF were trading with marginal gains. Mahindra & Mahindra reported a consolidated profit after tax of Rs 2,360.70 crore for the first quarter ended June 30, driven by the strong performance of its automotive and agriculture sectors.

Brightcom Group, the biggest loser of the week, has shed nearly 18 per cent so far and was among the top weekly losers among BSE 500 stocks. This was followed by Balrampur Chini, Indus Towers, GAIL India and Gorge Properties, falling between 9-12 per cent.

SpiceJet has jumped over 30 per cent and was the top weekly gainer so far among BSE 500 stocks. Similarly, Kansai Nerolac, PB Fintech, JSW Energy and HLE Glasscoat gained 19-25 per cent.

Asian markets also closed in the green on Friday. Tokyo shares closed higher after Thursday’s technical gains on Wall Street. The benchmark Nikkei 225 index rose 0.87 per cent. Chinese indices ended the week with a small gain as concerns over China’s military exercises around Taiwan eased. The Hang Seng Index rose 0.14 per cent and the Shanghai Composite Index rose 1.19 per cent.

European stocks slipped a bit today but still look ready for weekly gains. Markets eyeing US employment data that is about to be presented. This will give an overview of America’s economic health.
