Blanco’s eraser software enables charities to send ready donated devices to African children, supports the development of their digital skills, and fosters a circular economy
Austin and London – September 7, 2022 , Blanco Technology Group (LON: BLTG), the industry standard in data erasure and mobile lifecycle solutions, today announced that it is working with . Turing Trust, a UK charity that provides IT resources and training to schools in sub-Saharan Africa. Blanco will support this initiative with a free license for its Drive Eraser software. This enables the charity to securely refurbish the donated IT equipment (desktops, laptops, smart phones and tablets) given to schools across Africa to improve children’s access to computer technology and digital skills training goes. To date, Blanco has safely sanitized over 2,500 donated devices in collaboration with the charity.
The Turing Trust, which was launched in 2015, operates its largest project in Malawi where it works with 160 schools. When work on that project began in 2016, only 3% of Malawi’s schools had access to an IT lab. Now, 81% of schools in the country have devices that support the IT curriculum for children in primary and secondary education. Outside Malawi, the trust has also distributed containers of computers to children in Liberia, South Sudan, Kenya, Ghana and The Gambia. The Turing Trust also provides assistance with tools for Ukrainian refugees in the UK so that they can virtually continue to participate in Ukraine’s education program.
The donation of Blanco’s software will be instrumental in accelerating the project’s capabilities to upgrade the donated equipment at speed and scale. The secure erasure process guarantees the complete removal of data from the data-bearing asset, making it ready for reuse. The collaboration between Blanco and The Turing Trust is a shining example of how organizations can work together to promote the circular economy, by facilitating the reuse of equipment that would otherwise be prematurely destroyed. and contribute to the rising level of e-waste. Turing Trust reports That in 2020 it refurbished 45 tonnes of PC, equivalent to 954 tonnes in carbon savings. The environmental impact of the project offset the embodied energy needed to power 233 UK homes for one year.
Adam Moloney, Blanco’s CFO, said, “Every year organizations unnecessarily destroy IT equipment and equipment that can be reused, resold or recycled, following appropriate data sanitation best practices associated with the circular economy.” can.” “At a time when more environmental management is needed, the current approach to device management is simply unsustainable. We are very proud to be working with the Turing Trust to address issues of social and digital inclusion among school children in Africa We firmly believe that a student’s education and development should not be affected by their access to technology. Initiatives like this ensure that we can collectively reduce the impact on our planet and the communities that are in the hands of them. devices that need them most while adhering to security best practices.”
From the Turing Trust’s Edinburgh workshop, volunteers work on refurbishing donated equipment, providing them with valuable IT training opportunities. Volunteers are trained how to use Blanco software to securely erase residual data on each property. The charity’s CEO, James Turing, says it has offered significant experience to volunteers who have gone on to pursue careers in IT.
“Our vision is to ensure that everyone in the world has an equal opportunity to use a computer,” said James Turing, CEO of the Turing Trust. “By focusing our efforts in Malawi, we have shown how much progress can be made by supporting organizations and communities who want to donate their equipment and give them a new lease of life. We have a wide variety of There are donors and partners who support our cause. We are incredibly pleased to partner with Blanco, strengthening the security of our processes while we hope to encourage more organizations to come forward with donations .
The Turing Trust continues to expand its operations and receives donations from organizations around the world. It aims to align its objectives with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which recognize that strategies to end poverty and other deprivations should be accompanied by improvements in education and efforts to combat climate change. Inequality should be reduced during
