Indian Film Festival of Melbourne 2022: Several films like ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’, ‘Badhaai Do’, ‘Jai Bheem’, ’83’ and ‘Minal Murali’ have been nominated for the best film at the 13th edition of the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM).
This year’s top nominees include film producers and directors of films like ‘Jai Bhim’, ‘The Rapist’, ‘Gangubai Kathiwadi’, ’83’, ‘Badhaai Do’, ‘Sardar Udham Singh’ among others.
Indie films nominations include ‘Pedro’, ‘Once Upon a Time in Calcutta’, ‘Fair Folk’ among others, while ‘Aka’, ‘Aayana’, ‘Ladies Only’ are some of the Best Document nominees. The winners of Best Film, Best Indie Film, and Best Documentary each win an award plus Black Magic Design’s state-of-the-art cameras. Another highlight of the film festival is that the Best Film winner is cleared for a nomination under the Best Asian Film category at the annual prestigious AACTA (Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards).
This year also those awards will be rounded up with Best Series, Best Actor in a Series and Best Actress in a Series. ‘Mumbai Diaries’, ‘Aranyak’, ‘My’ and ‘Yeh Kali Kali Aankhen’ have been included in these categories.
Gopal Hegde for ‘Pedro’, Rajkummar Rao for ‘Badhaai Do’, Ranveer Singh ’83’, Suriya, Tovino Thomas, Vicky Kaushal and Abhishek have been named in the Best Actor category. While names like Alia Bhatt, Deepika Padukone, Bhumi Pednekar, Kokona Sen Sharma, Lijomol Jose, Shefali Shah, Sreelekha Mitra and Vidya Balan are nominated in the Best Actor (Female) category.
films such as Bhutan’s Pakistani film ‘Joyland’, ‘Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom’, Bangladesh’s ‘No Man’s Land’ and Rehana Mariam Noor; And the Sri Lankan film ‘The Newspaper’ has made it to the best film of the subcontinent.
Presented by the Victorian Government, the festival is an annual festival that takes place in Melbourne, Australia and showcases the best films from India and the subcontinent. This year the festival is starting from 12-20 August. Awards night is scheduled to take place on August 14.
