Coronavirus: Even after the corona infection has been cured, many people have troublesome symptoms for a long time. This is the first time a large study has taken place on this widespread problem. According to this study published in the Lancet journal, one out of every eight infected has long-term symptoms i.e. Long Kovid.
With millions of people still infected with the coronavirus and re-infections becoming more common, this study indicates that the coronavirus will remain a challenge to public health policy and the economy for a long time.
This study has been done in the Netherlands. According to Professor Judith Rosmellen from the University of Groningen in the Netherlands, there is an urgent need for diagnosing and understanding the scale and scope of long-term symptoms experienced by some patients after corona illness.
In this study, the researchers looked at the symptoms associated with the corona for a long time before the corona diagnosis and in those who have not been diagnosed with the disease. These symptoms include breathing problems, fatigue, and loss of taste and smell.
How did the study happen?
The researchers collected data by asking participants to regularly fill out digital questionnaires on 23 symptoms associated with long-term COVID-19. The questionnaire was sent to the same person 24 times between March 2020 and August 2021, meaning that participants who had corona during this period were infected with the alpha-variant or earlier variants.
Most of the data was collected before the corona vaccine rollout in the Netherlands, so the number of vaccinated participants was too small to analyse. A total of 76,422 participants were analyzed.
Researchers found that many symptoms were new or more severe three to five months after being diagnosed with the virus than before diagnosis. This suggests that these symptoms can be seen as the main symptoms of long covid. These main symptoms include chest pain, difficulty breathing, shortness of breath, muscle pain, loss of taste or smell, tingling in the hands and feet, a lump in the throat, feeling alternately hot and cold, heavy Hands or feet and general fatigue were included.
According to the researchers, the severity of these symptoms did not decline further after three months of infection. Other symptoms that did not increase three to five months after the diagnosis of corona included headache, itchy eyes, dizziness, back pain and nausea. Huh.
Aranka Ballering, lead author of the study, said these key symptoms have major implications for future research, as these symptoms could be used to differentiate between post-coronavirus conditions and non-coronavirus related symptoms. According to the study, new or severely increased symptoms three months after recovery in 12.7 percent of corona patients can be attributed to corona infection.
Researchers conclude that chronic covid is a major health problem that needs immediate attention.
The researchers did not investigate the cause of long covid or the effect of vaccination or different corona virus variants on such cases.
According to another study author Judith Rosemelon, future research should include mental health symptoms (such as depression and anxiety), as well as additional infectious symptoms that we could not assess in this study. such as mental confusion, insomnia and physical malaise).
