Cheetah Project in MP: Today, on the birthday of PM Modi, cheetahs from Namibia were brought to India’s Kuno National Park. Cheetahs brought to India have 5 females and 3 males. If we talk about the age of all the cheetahs brought to India, then all the cheetahs are between 4 and 6 years old. PM Modi freed 3 cheetahs out of 8 cheetahs brought. Freed cheetahs include two males and one female. We are talking about why cheetahs were brought to India, what is the specialty of the cheetahs brought, why was the Kuno National Park chosen for the cheetahs to live in. Let’s know why?
why cheetah is important
Why the Cheetah is Important to Our Ecosystem Environment, Forest and Climate Change According to social media reports, the cheetah is the top animal in the food chain. In its absence, the entire food chain is affected. In India, cheetahs were found in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Orissa, Tamil Nadu. But gradually their number ended and its effect was also seen on the land area of the area of cheetah. The whole ecosystem there ended. Many herbivorous creatures ended their existence from these areas. Due to which the grasslands were also destroyed. The impact of which is also visible on the environment.
Know this specialty of the cheetahs brought
Of the eight cheetahs that reached India, three are male and five are female. The age of two male cheetahs is five and a half years. Both are brothers. Both have been brought from a private reserve in Otjiwarongo, Namibia. The age of the third male cheetah is four and a half years. It has been brought from Erindi Private Game Reserve. Of the five female cheetahs, one is two years old, one two and a half years old, one three to four years old and two five-five years old.
Why were cheetahs kept in the Kuno National Park?
Let us tell you that the Kuno National Park was prepared about 20 years ago to bring Asiatic lions to India. But the Asiatic lions could not be brought to the Kuno National Park. The preparations made for lions are now being used for cheetahs. Apart from the Kuno National Park, the assessment was done by scientists at Nauradehi Sanctuary in Madhya Pradesh, Bhaisrodgarh Wildlife Complex in Rajasthan and Shahgarh.
After estimating all the parks, the scientists selected the Kuno National Park for the relocation of the cheetahs. Kuno National Park is the Kuno Palpur Wildlife Sanctuary on the banks of river Kuno in Sheopur district, about 400 km from Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh. This place has also been considered right for cheetahs to live because the population of humans in the forests here is very less.
How much does it cost to bring cheetahs to India
The Government of India had informed in the Lok Sabha in February 2022 that a budget of Rs 38.70 crore has been passed for the Cheetah Project from 2021-22 to 2025-26. These cheetahs are being brought to India under this project.
