PM Ujjwala Yojana: Questions are being raised on Ujjwala scheme, more than 4 crore beneficiaries have not refilled the cylinder even once

PM Ujjwala Yojana: On 1 May 2016, Ujjwala Yojana was launched with great enthusiasm by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from Ballia district of Uttar Pradesh. The objective of this scheme was to save the housewives of low income group from the harmful effects of smoke coming from the burning of cow dung cakes and wood.

But according to the information given by the government in Parliament regarding the status of the scheme, it has deviated from its purpose. On Monday, the government was informed in the Parliament that 4.13 crore beneficiaries of the Prime Minister Ujjwala Yojana have not filled the cylinder even once.

Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Rameshwar Teli, while giving a written answer to a question in the Rajya Sabha, said that in all these years, 7.67 crore beneficiaries got the cylinder refilled once. Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha and senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge had sought details of such beneficiaries of such Ujjwala scheme from the government, who have filled cylinders once in the last five years or not.

Giving the figures, Union Minister of State Rameshwar Teli said that between the year 2017-18, 0.46 crore PUMY (Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana) beneficiaries did not refill any cylinder while 1.19 crore beneficiaries got the cylinder refilled. According to him, 1.24 crore during 2018-19, 1.41 crore during 2019-20, 0.10 crore during 2020-21 and 0.92 crore during 2021-22 did not refill cylinder even once.

The Minister of State informed that during 2018-19, 2.90 crore, during 2019-20, 1.83 crore, during 2020-21, 0.67 crore and during 2021-22, 1.08 crore beneficiaries got cylinder refilled only once.

Declaration of fixed aid amount

Rameshwar Teli informed that the government has announced a fixed amount of Rs 200 per 14.2 kg cylinder for up to 12 refills per year for the year 2022-23 for the beneficiaries of Ujjwala scheme from May 21, 2022.

Explain that under the Ujjwala scheme, the government gives free gas connections to the women of poor families. The government has so far distributed 9 crore free LPG connections under this scheme. The government has retained the subsidy only for the beneficiaries of the Ujjwala scheme, eliminating the subsidy for the rest of the LPG consumers.
