Pakistan needed 13 runs to win in the last over, while India needed one wicket. There were only two options left before Dhoni to get the last over. The ball was given to Harbhajan Singh or the ball was given to fast bowler Joginder Sharma who could not make an impact in the match. Dhoni surprised everyone by choosing another option.
