new Delhi: Amedework Walelegn of Ethiopia won the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon with a record time of 58 minutes 53 seconds, beating compatriot Andamlak Belihu in a thrilling contest.

Andamalak Belihu won the title here in 2018 and 2019. He had to be satisfied with the silver medal with a time of 58.54. Stephen Kissa of Uganda completed the 21.09 km race in 58 minutes 56 seconds.

India’s Avinash Sable took an hour and 30 seconds to qualify for the 3000 Steeplechase at the Tokyo Olympics. The Airtel Delhi Half Marathon is the first global sports event in India amid Coronavirus epidemic.

Union Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju and Delhi Deputy CM Manish Sisodia were also present in the event. Rijiju wrote on Twitter, ‘The first international sports event in India after the epidemic. I am excited about the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon in which Indian and international marathon runners have participated.
