Argentina stadium named after Diego Maradona


Buenos Aires: The Ciudad de La Plata Stadium in Argentina has now been renamed Diego Maradona Stadium.

Maradona of Argentina died last month. This stadium, with a capacity of 53000 spectators, is the Ghernu Stadium of Gimnasia y Esgrima, located in La Plata, 60 km southeast of Buenos Aires. Maradona was the coach of this club until his death.

La Plata Governor Axel Kicillof said, ‘We have resolved to change the name of the stadium. Diego Maradona is unique and he is able to name the stadium after him.

Axel Kicillof further said that a stand of the stadium would be named after former Argentine manager Alejandro Sabella, who died of cancer last week.

Earlier, Napoli, one of Italy’s top football clubs, decided to name the stadium after Maradona of Argentina, one of the greatest football players of all time, after his death.

The president of Napoli Club Aurelio De Laurentiis said in a statement that San Paolo Stadium would now be known as Maradona.

Maradona played for the Napoli club from 1984 to 1991. He won 2 Serie-A, Copa Italia and one UEFA Cup titles with the club. Napoli had never won a title until Maradona joined the club.

Diego Maradona departed from Napoli Club as his highest goalscorer. His record was broken in 2017 by Marek Hamsik.
