Asia Cup 2022 – Challenge to face world champions India: Dasun Shanaka of Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka on Monday said India’s IPL experience and winning mindset make them a challenging team as their team looks to make it to the Asia Cup final. The island nation won its maiden Super Four match and know that Rohit Sharma’s yet another win against India in Dubai on Tuesday will put them closer to a shot at the title. Sri Lanka beat Afghanistan on Saturday, while India lost to arch-rivals Pakistan to open the Super Four round. They desperately need a win to stay in the race for Sunday’s final.

Injuries reached India without spearheads Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel. All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who bowled left-arm spin, suffered a knee injury during the tournament.

“It doesn’t matter who comes from the Indian team. He has a lot of experience playing in the IPL and around the world,” Shanaka told reporters.

“Their body language and mindset is to beat any country at the international level. That’s how we are well prepared and look forward to it.”

India are defending their Asia Cup title won in 2018 when the 50-over format was used in the tournament, but their last ICC title came in the 2013 Champions Trophy.

The importance of this year’s Asia Cup has also increased because the T20 World Cup is held in Australia in October and November.

India started this Asia Cup with a win over Pakistan but suffered a five-wicket defeat on Sunday.

Shanaka believes that there will be no pressure on India against him.

“I think they had a great game last night. Nothing can be said under pressure at the moment because they are playing very good cricket,” Shanaka said.

He added: “Our approach will be the same as in other sports, playing in a positive way.”

Sri Lanka made a comeback from their opening loss at the hands of Afghanistan in the group stage, defeating Bangladesh to enter the Super Four.

The team then chased down 176 in Sharjah to beat the Afghans by four wickets and Shanaka insisted that his batting was the key to success.
