Asia Cup: How India can still reach the final. All scenarios explained

Rohit Sharma in anxious mood after India’s Asia Cup loss to Sri Lanka

The Indian cricket team suffered a second consecutive defeat in the Super 4 stage of the Asia Cup 2022 on Tuesday night as it once again failed to defend a target of over 170 runs. India had given Sri Lanka a target of 174 runs and Sri Lanka achieved it with 6 wickets and one ball to spare. The last two overs were the exact replica of how India lost their match against Pakistan on Sunday.

Ineffective bowling by Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the final over again damaged India and young Arshdeep’s best efforts went in vain as he had just 6 runs to defend in both the cases.

India’s toothless bowling in the powerplay set up Sri Lanka’s victory as Sri Lankan openers Nissanka and Mendis ran away with the match. Yuzvendra Chahal’s three wickets brought India into the match, but the fast bowlers did not have the sharp edge to help the Indians dominate in the death overs.

A second straight defeat means India are now on the verge of being out. But Rohit Sharma’s team can still qualify for the final.

Here are all the scenarios with three other teams in mind:

Sri Lanka: Sri Lanka have reached the final after their second consecutive win. India will now need Sri Lanka to beat Pakistan and that too by a huge margin.

Pakistan:If Pakistan beat Afghanistan on Wednesday, then it is a curtain for Rohit Sharma’s team. India needs Babar Azam and his teammates to lose to Sri Lanka by a huge margin and against Afghanistan by a relatively close margin.

Afghanistan:The mighty Afghans will be India’s final opponents in the Super 4 stage but before that they will need Mohammad Nabi’s team to beat Pakistan. India would then hope to defeat the Afghans by a large margin to keep their chances alive.
