Boxam International: Corona’s shadow over boxing, three Indian boxers removed from tournament finals


New Delhi: Three Indian boxers have been eliminated from the final of the 35th Boksam International Tournament in Castalione, Spain due to an Indian player being found positive in the Kovid-19 Test. Ashish Kumar, who has already qualified for the Olympics in the 75 kg weight category, has to withdraw from the finals after being found infected with this deadly virus.

Two more boxers went out

Apart from Ashish Kumar being removed from the final, two more Indian boxers have been removed from the final. Mohammed Hussamuddin (57 kg) and Sumit Sangwan (81 kg) of the 57 kg weight category, living in the same room with Ashish, have also had to withdraw from the final matches on Sunday night. The gold medals of these three were believed to be firm, but now they will have to be satisfied with the silver medal.

However, the test of Mohammed Hussamuddin and Sumit Sangwan has come negative and both of them will now return to India with the team on Monday.

Ashish did not see any signs

Ashish Kumar, however, has not seen any symptoms of corona and is also healthy. But he will remain in isolation for two weeks in Castalione before returning to India. Apart from this, in 91 kg Satish Kumar will also not be able to participate in the final due to ill health. Accordingly, Manish Kaushik from India became the only boxer to win a gold medal for India in 65 kg. Manish defeated Nikolai Terteryan of Denmark in the final.

Simranjeet Kaur also removed from finals in women

In the women’s 60 kg weight category, Simranjeet Kaur also had to withdraw from the finals, as her rival Puerto Rico’s Kiriya Tapia was also found positive in the test in the semi-finals. Although Simranjit’s test came negative.
