Ace Indian shuttler PV Sindhu on Thursday entered the pre-quarterfinals of the women’s singles event with a straight-game win over Fatimath Nabaha Abdul Razzaq of Maldives at the Commonwealth Games. It was always going to be an uphill task for two-time Olympic medalist Fatimath, who won the Round of 32 match 21-4 21-11 in just 21 minutes.
Sindhu, the last edition’s silver-medallist in singles, barely broke a sweat while battling her opponent in the first game.
Without taking an aggressive stance, Sindhu overtook Madivas Shuttler with her all-rounder game. She mostly used her deceptive drop shots to score points.
In the second game, Fatimath produced some resistance initially and was on level terms with Sindhu till 9-9, as the Indian scored mostly on unforced errors.
But Sindhu regained her composure and took a breather to lead 11-9.
After the break, it was all Sindhu as she ran away from the game with just two points with Razzaq to book her place in the last-16.
Star Indian shuttler Kidambi Srikanth began his men’s singles campaign by defeating Uganda’s Daniel Vanaglia to reach the 16th stage of the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Birmingham on Thursday. In his match of the 32nd round, Srikanth won his match 21-9, 21-9. The Indian player dominated the match and he barely gave Vanaglia a chance to take advantage. As a result, he sealed the match within two straight games. CWG 2018 silver medalist Srikanth will play his round of 16 match on Friday.
Notably, Sindhu and Srikanth were part of the Indian mixed badminton team that won a silver medal at the CWG 2022.
The Indian badminton team on Tuesday won the silver medal in the mixed group match of the Commonwealth Games 2022.
The Indian mixed badminton team suffered a 1-3 loss against Malaysia and had to be content with silver. Only Sindhu managed to win the summit clash against Malaysia in the women’s singles match.
