Long jumpers Murali Sreeshankar and Muhammad Anees Yahiya qualified for the finals of the men’s long jump event after clearing their respective qualifying rounds at the Commonwealth Games. Sreeshankar entered the final with a jump of 8.05m on his very first. The 23-year-old from Kerala, one of the top Indian medal contenders, was the only athlete in his group to surpass the qualifying mark of 8 metres.
The slim youngster was excited and rushed to his coach and the Indian audience soon after the jump.
Meanwhile, Yahia also reached the finals in his three attempts with jumps of 7.49m, 7.68m and 7.49m.
While Yahia was slow from the block, he improved his performance from the second attempt and finished third in his group behind Guyana’s Emanuel Archibald and Australia’s Christopher Mitrevsky.
