Indian shuttlers PV Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth advanced to the quarter-finals of the women’s and men’s singles respectively with easy wins at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham on Friday. Sindhu, silver medalist in the 2018 edition, did not face any resistance from Uganda’s Husina Kobugabe, registering a 21-10, 21-9 win in her pre-quarterfinal match. Srikanth, who finished second in Gold Coast, also left no stone unturned to register a 21-9, 21-12 win over Sri Lanka’s Dumindu Abevikrama in men’s singles.

Earlier, the Indian women’s pair of Gayatri Gopichand and Tresa Jolly had made it to the last eight with a 21-2, 21-4 win over Mauritius’s Jemima Leung For Song and Ganesha Mungra.

Double Olympic medalist Sindhu will next take on Malaysia’s Goh Jin Wei for a place in the semi-finals.

Sindhu had beaten Goh in two tough games in the final of the mixed team final and can’t afford to let down her guard against the 22-year-old Malaysian, who won the World Junior Championships gold in 2015 and 2018.

Former world number one Srikanth will face England’s Toby Penty, who is ranked 54th in the world.

Gayatri and Trisa will now take on Jamaica’s Tahlia Richardson and Katherine Winter.
