India’s Sudhir won a historic gold medal in men’s heavyweight para powerlifting and also created a Commonwealth Games record with a total of 134.5 points. Sudhir lifted 208 kg in his first attempt and then took the lead with his second weight of 212 kg.
Sudhir, 27, a bronze medalist of the Asian Para Games, is disabled due to the effects of polio. He opened India’s Para Sports medal account in the ongoing Commonwealth Games.
Ikechuku Kristian Obichuku won the silver medal with 133.6 points, while Mickey Yule took the bronze with 130.9 points.
Sudhir had won bronze in men’s 88kg with a best lift of 214kg at the World Para Powerlifting Asia-Oceania Open Championships in South Korea in June.

Sudhir, who started powerlifting in 2013 in Sonipat, has also qualified for the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Para Games, which was postponed to next year.
