Indian boxer Rohit Tokas (67kg) on Tuesday entered the quarterfinals of the men’s welterweight category at the Commonwealth Games. The 29-year-old Delhi boxer registered a 5-0 win over Ghana’s Alfred Cote. Playing with an open guard for the better part of the bout, Tokas spent the first round defending as Kote played the role of the offensive. While Kote hit more punches than Tokas, he was not clean and the Indian defended well to seal a 4-1 victory.
In the second round, Tokas, who is making his CWG debut, looked more confident and made several perfect strokes and hooks to win over his opponent as well.
Tokas landed a combination of punches on his opponent in the last three minutes. Kota had no answer to the Indian attack as all five judges ruled in favor of the latter.
Tokas is now just one win away from ensuring a medal.
