Adam Zampa – Foreign franchise leagues ‘not in my calculations’ in UAE South Africa

Adam Zampa refused to entertain the prospect of playing in the new franchise T20 leagues in the United Arab Emirates and South Africa and insisted he is focused on representing Australia for as long as possible.

Many Australian players, notably David Warner, have been actively attracted by new teams in the International League of T20 (ILT20) in the United Arab Emirates, which clash with the second half of the Big Bash League (BBL). But Zampa ruled out the possibility that he would consider playing another league during the Australian season, as long as he is playing international cricket.

“It’s great that there are so many contests, but to be honest, it’s probably a long-term thing for me,” he told ESPNcricinfo. “I’m 30 and when you’re signed with Australia, I think – well, I know people won’t get NOCs [No-Objection Certificates] to play those competitions.

“Playing cricket for Australia is my priority and then obviously the BBL is a bonus in the summer. As long as I’m doing that, those other competitions aren’t really in my calculations. I think about the player’s own reaction. Quite open. On the BBL side – I certainly have.

“I still love the BBL. It’s been a big part of my career and [overseas player] Draft brings something new to it. Obviously there’s the whole David Warner story going on in the background but if we can somehow get the best players to play in it, it’s clearly the best for the competition. ,

More than 150 overseas players have been nominated for this month’s player draft, but many of them will only be available for the first seven or eight matches of the season before leaving for the UAE or South Africa. But key Australian players are set to be available for more tournaments this year than usual, while several Test players – including Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Steven Smith – are in talks about the possibility of signing deals.

Meanwhile, Zampa has one year left on his Melbourne Stars contract and is in talks about an extension. “There is little chance for those guys to play BBL this year,” he said. “If we can somehow get the best players playing more and more games, you’ll get interested in the kids and you’ll inspire people to watch it on TV, which is why we’re doing it.

“With franchise cricket now it’s the way of the world. If we can get some of the world’s best players in even half of it, you guys are going to see it. In a perfect world, you’d have the full There are some players available for competition but sometimes it doesn’t work that way.

,[Administratiors] have played their cards along the length of . We played 14 games in a span of seven or eight weeks: I don’t mind the 14 game part of it, but sometimes two months can be kind of a drag out. When you’re trying to bring in the best players in the world and play an entire competition, that’s probably a little too much to ask. I don’t have a problem with the number of games, but if they can narrow it down to a period of five or six weeks where you get the best overseas players for the whole time, I think it will take a lot of discretion.”

Zampa, speaking at KP Snacks’ summer cricket roadshow at St David’s Shopping Center in Cardiff, is in the UK for the first five matches of the Hundred, before leaving for Australia’s ODI series against Zimbabwe. He took 0 for 20 off 15 balls in the season opener on Wednesday night as the Welsh Fire was hammered by the Southern Braves, his first appearance in nearly four months after missing a tour of Sri Lanka on paternity leave.

“It’s a good opportunity for me to play in a new competition,” he said. “We missed our series against Bangladesh last year and this is a good opportunity for me to just play some cricket as I have been away from work for a while now.

“The standard of competition is good. There’s a lot of depth and you have these guys coming out of county cricket and the way they play is really fearless. I haven’t played for a while so it’s good to be back and I am enjoying being a part of this competition and its innovation.

“Next year, we don’t really have a clash with the Hundred and that will be good. It’s really hard to play franchise cricket, build relationships quickly and then leave. Obviously international cricket is first and foremost, but hopefully That’s next year it will line up. Up and we can all play a hundred.”

“The Fire played their first home game of the 2022 season against the Southern Braves in Cardiff on Sunday afternoon,” Zampa said. “I’m excited to play a home game: obviously it was a really tough start for us the other night, so it would be great to turn it up in front of Welsh fans.”

KP Snacks, Official Team Partner of the Hundred, is touring the country this summer to provide people with more opportunities to play cricket as part of their ‘Everyone In’ campaign. Go to everyone.co.uk/about.
