BCB to probe social media posts sponsoring Shakib Al Hasan

The BCB will investigate Shakib Al Hasan’s recent social media post in which he announced his partnership with a company called “BetWinner News”. During a press conference after the board meeting on Thursday, BCB chairman Najmul Hasan said they would serve a notice to Shakib for not informing him of the sponsorship deal.

Current laws in Bangladesh place strict restrictions on any gatherings or establishments that facilitate gambling. Allowing the gambling business to operate is a violation of the law as well as the constitution of the country.

Shakib made the announcement on Twitter on Tuesday, soon after Bangladesh lost the third T20 match against Zimbabwe. Shakib initially deleted the tweet, but reposted it shortly after.

“The latest sponsorship of Shakib was discussed in Thursday’s meeting,” Hasan said. “We have directed him to give notice, to ask him what is going on with it. The board will not allow it if it is related to betting. He certainly hasn’t asked us for permission. Bangladesh law allows it. Lets not. It’s a serious issue. However we can’t rely on just one Facebook post (sic), so we’ll have to investigate to find out about it.”

In an interview with Dhaka-based Bengali newspaper color kanthoBCB chief executive Nizamuddin Chowdhury also said that they would still seek an explanation from Shakib.

“It is quite clear why these news portals have been created,” he said. “We all know very well what these are. Shakib did not inform us about his deal. We heard about it today (Wednesday). We are looking into it legally, and the matter is resolved quickly.” want.
