CWG 2022: Bhavnaben Patel wins gold in Para Table Tennis Women’s Singles

Star Indian para table tennis player Bhavna Patel won a gold medal in the women’s singles category 3-5 at the Commonwealth Games here on Saturday. The 35-year-old from Gujarat, who won silver at the Tokyo Paralympics, put up a stellar performance in the quadrennial event with a 12-10, 11-2, 11-9 win over Nigeria’s Efechukude Kristiana Ikpoyi. Bhawna climbed to the world No. 2 ranking by winning a silver medal in the individual category at the 2011 PTT Thailand Open.

Apart from this, she also won a silver medal in women’s singles category 4 at the 2013 Asian Para Table Tennis Championships in Beijing.

In 2017, Bhawna won a bronze medal at the Asian Para Table Tennis Championships in Beijing. Sonalben Manubhai Patel also led India to a medal by claiming bronze in the women’s singles category 3-5.

The 34-year-old Indian defeated Sue Bailey of England 11-5 11-2 11-3 in the bronze medal play-off.

However, Raj Aravindan Alagar lost 0-3 to Isau Ogunkunle of Nigeria in the men’s singles category 3-5 bronze medal play-off.

Para powerlifter Sudhir also won the gold medal in men’s heavyweight by setting a Commonwealth Games record.


In Para Table Tennis, classes 1-5 are for wheelchair athletes.
