Gurdeep Singh started India’s weightlifting campaign with a bronze medal in the 109kg category at the Commonwealth Games here on Wednesday. The 26-year-old debutant made a best effort of 390kg (167kg+223kg) for the podium finish. Pakistan’s Mohammad Noah Butt won the gold medal for his record breaking lift of 405 kg (173 kg + 232 kg). David Andrew Litti of New Zealand won the silver medal for his effort of 394 kg (170 kg + 224 kg).
Singh did not have a good start as he failed his first attempt of the 167kg snatch. He managed to lift the weight in his second attempt. However, he failed in his third attempt of 173 kg. Entering the clean and jerk at joint third, Singh started with 207kg.
There were some panic moments for the Indian as he failed in his second clean and jerk attempt of 215kg.
