After winning the historic gold medal in the Lawn Bowls event at the Commonwealth Games 2022, Roopa Rani Tirkey said that she had goosebumps when she went to the podium and the national anthem was played. The Indian Lawn Bowls team created history by winning their maiden medal in the game, capturing the gold by defeating South Africa 17-10 in the final.
Roopa Rani Tirkey told ANI, “I feel very proud. Our gongta khada tha tha (when we went to the podium and the national anthem was played. We never thought about it but today it has become possible. “
Nayanmoni Saikia, another member of the historic gold-winning team, said that he did not lose hope throughout the game and communication between the team helped him score points against South Africa.
Nayanmoni Saikia said, “When they drew 1-1, our morale went down a bit. But we didn’t lose hope. We talked to each other and understood that we can do it. We can do it one point at a time. Will get it and cover it.” Told.
Talking about the incident, the action went back and forth between India and their opponents, who are among the best teams in the sport with 44 medals. In this historic match, India was represented by Roopa Rani Tirkey, Nayanmoni Saikia, Lovely Choubey and Pinky Singh. India won the match 17-10.
India started the match with a lead before South Africa won 2–2. India dominated their opponents after the end 7, the score read 7-2 in their favour.

India never looked back from there and ended the match with gold in their hands, while South Africa had to be content with silver.
Earlier in the day, the Indian women’s triple team of Tania Choudhary, Pinky and Roopa Rani Tricky beat New Zealand 15-11 after 18 ends in their first round match.
But in the women’s doubles category, Lovely Choubey, Nayanoni Saikia’s team India were defeated by New Zealand by a margin of 9-18.
Earlier on Sunday, India’s Lawn Bowles men’s pair of Dinesh Kumar and Sunil Bahadur advanced to the quarter-finals after winning over England in their Section C match.
Tania Choudhary, on the other hand, broke the losing streak at Lawn Bowles by defeating Northern Ireland’s Shauna O’Neill 21-12 after 19 ends. Despite winning the match, she failed to qualify for the quarter-finals as she had previously recorded three straight losses against De Hogan (Scotland), Arthur Almond (Falkland Islands) and Laura Daniels (Wales).
