IND vs AUS- “Definite Choice For Us”: Rohit Sharma On Virat Kohli Opening In T20 World Cup

Rohit Sharma-led Team India will take on Australia in the three-match T20 series starting in Mohali from Tuesday. It will be interesting to see if the hosts continue with the same level of experimentation that was displayed during the Asia Cup, where the team failed to make the finals of the continental tournament. Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel have recovered from their injuries, so it is an added bonus for Team India. Captain Rohit Sharma on Sunday addressed a press conference where he talked about what to expect and whether Virat Kohli can be seen as an opener in the shortest format.

“It’s always good to have options available to you. Going into the World Cup it’s important that you have the flexibility. You want the players to bat in the best of conditions in any situation. When we try something new , then it does not happen. Meaning it is a problem,” Rohit said during a press conference.

“For us, we understand the quality of all our players and what they bring to us. But yes, it is an option (Virat Kohli opening) for us, we will always keep that in mind. Since we haven’t picked up the third opener He has opened for his franchise in the IPL and he has done really well, so it is a definite option for us.”

Talking about Virat Kohli’s batting ahead, Rohit said: “Virat Kohli is our third opener and he will open in a few games. In the last match of the Asia Cup, we were happy with the way he played. But KL Rahul will open. Batting in the World Cup, his performance sometimes doesn’t get enough attention.”

“He is a very important player for Team India. For us, I just want to make it clear, we are clear in our thought process. We have no illusions, we are very clear about what KL Rahul has on the table for us. He is a quality player and very important for us. His presence at the top is very important for us,” the 35-year-old said.

Ahead of the series opener, it was confirmed that Mohammed Shami will not play a role as he has tested positive for COVID-19 and Umesh Yadav has been named as his replacement.

“There were a few options, but some of them are injured like Prasid. Siraj is playing county, we don’t want him to fly all the way, maybe play a game or two. It wouldn’t be fair. Obviously, Shami’s unfortunate incident happened to him. Avesh was very ill in the Asia Cup and he needs some time to recover. From a fitness point of view, he needs some time and rebuilds his fitness. All those things considered. People like Umesh, Shami, Those who are bowling for a long time, they don’t need to play a format to be considered,” Rohit said.

“He has proved himself as a player in whatever format he has played. We understand the quality, it is the newcomers on whom it will depend whether they have played this format or not. But Umesh and People like Shami, if he is fit and fine, he will be called back. We don’t need to look at his form, we saw how Umesh bowled in the IPL.

Talking further about Umesh’s selection, Rohit said: “He bowled really well, he swings the ball, he bowls fast. The idea was really simple. It’s a topic of much discussion for us. There was no. With the World Cup in mind, we have tried a lot of players. We are very clear in our thought process and how we want to move forward.”
