The openers Sibley and Burns played well in the first hour. Ishant and Bumrah, playing the first Test in India, played sensibly and did not let India get early success early.
Earlier, England captain Joe Root won the toss and decided to bat. Ben Stokes, Joffra Archer and Rory Burns, who have been out of Sri Lanka tour, have returned to the team. Virat Kohli has returned to the team after paternity leave.
