Chennai: Indian team vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane, who is trying to make it to the finals of the World Test Championship, hopes that the pitch of the Chepauk ground in the second Test match against England for spin bowlers from day one. Would be helpful
The Indian team lost the first match of the four-match series by 227 runs. For the first two days of the game in that match, the bowlers did not get any help from the flat pitch, but there is very little grass and moisture on the pitch of the match starting on Saturday, which is likely to help the spinners.
Rahane (Ajinkya Rahane) said before the match, ‘Yes, this pitch looks completely different. I am sure it will be helpful for the spinners from day one but as I said before the initial Test match, you have to wait and see how it goes in the first session.
Rahane (Ajinkya Rahane) said, ‘But we have to forget the first test. We know these situations very well and we have to play our best game tomorrow. The good thing for us is that Akshar Patel is fit, but I cannot tell you now who will be in the last 11. All our spinners are good and whoever gets the chance will do well.
Rahane defended the spinners’ performance during the first Test match and said that the team is not worried about their first innings performance. He said, ‘If you see the first two days of the game, then the spinners and fast bowlers were not getting any help from the pitch. We bowled 190 overs and looking at their 578 runs, it can be said that we did not bowl well.
Rahane said, ‘There was no help coming from that pitch. If you look at the second innings, all our spinners bowled well, especially Ashwin. When asked about 27 no balls in the first Test and 31 catches from the tour so far, the Indian vice-captain said that work is on to improve on it.
Rahane said, ‘We are really working hard on those things which are under our control. In India, catching catches is really important for the fielder close to the batsman and sometimes such things (catching misses) happen. Nobody does it intentionally, it’s all about your trust. We are all disappointed with the no ball and the bowlers are working on it.
