New Delhi: Charismatic Indian player Sunil Chhetri does not like to count his total goals even after beating the legendary Lionel Messi in terms of number of goals at the international level.
Chhetri beats Messi
Thirty-six-year-old Chhetri scored both goals for India against Bangladesh in the combined qualifying matches of the FIFA World Cup 2022 and AFC Asian Cup 2023 on Monday. In this way his total number of international goals has gone up to 74. Messi has 72 international goals to his name. The Indian captain said that he will probably count his goals after 10 years.
don’t like to count goals
Chhetri said, ‘I do not count the number of goals. After ten years we will sit together and talk and count it. Nayak Chhetri, India’s first win in the last six years in the World Cup qualifiers, is only behind Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo (103) in the list of most active goalscorers.
The focus is on correcting the shortcomings
Instead of his goal, Chhetri is focusing on rectifying the shortcomings of the match played on Monday. “We had missed a lot of opportunities,” he said. We could have done better. This qualifying campaign has been full of ups and downs. Looking back, it looks like we could have done a lot better at this. We will talk about it but I am happy that we were able to score three points.
India registered a spectacular victory
Chhetri scored the first goal in the 79th minute at the Jasim Bin Hamad Stadium on Monday and then scored the second goal in injury time to ensure India’s victory. The Indian captain is just one goal behind from breaking into the top 10 in the all-time list of highest goalscorers. He is one goal behind Hungary’s Sando Ko Kasis, Japan’s Kunishige Kamoto and Kuwait’s Bashar Abdullah. All three have scored the same 75 goals.
