Sunil Gavaskar now defended his statement saying that he never blamed his actress wife Anushka Sharma for Virat Kohli’s failure during the Indian Premier League match. She said that this is not an anti-women comment and her words were misrepresented.
Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Kohli’s performance against Kings XI Punjab was not good. After giving up two catches during the match, Kohli also failed to bat and could only score one run. On which Gavaskar, sitting in the commentary box, commented about Kohli’s wife Anushka. This comment did not go down well with Royal Challengers Bangalore captain and Anushka and her fans reacted to it and Anushka posted a statement on her Instagram page. He called it a ‘bad comment’.
Gavaskar, however, said that his comments were not understood in the right context. According to Gavaskar, the remark was in reference to a video clip in which Kohli and Anushka were seen enjoying tennis ball cricket in their home premises.
Gavaskar said, ‘First of all, I would like to ask where I am blaming him (Anushka), I am not blaming him. I am only saying that it was seen in the video that she was bowling to Virat. Virat has only practiced this bowling in this lockdown period.
He said, ‘It was a fun match with tennis ball, in which people helped to spend time during lockdown. This is so, now in this I am blaming him for Virat’s failures.
Gavaskar called her remarks on social media regrettable for being called anti-women. He said, ‘I am among them, who has always advocated taking wives with the players on tour. I have always said that when a normal working man comes home from office, he comes back to his wife, why can’t cricketers also be with their wives? ”
Trying to explain his remarks, he said, ‘You can hear in the commentary that Akash (Chopra) was talking about the fact that in lockdown, there was very little chance for anyone to practice properly’.
Gavaskar said, ‘Some players saw its impact in the first match. Rohit was not able to hit the ball well but he scored in the second match. MSD were unable to hit the ball well in the first match.
He said, ‘I only said at that time that Anushka was bowling to him (Virat). I did not use any other words. ‘Anushka was bowling’, where am I blaming Anushka in this, where is the anti-women thing in it. ‘
