Australia legend Ricky Ponting made some bold calls while trying to decide who will be more dominant in the 2022 T20 World Cup – Jasprit Bumrah or Shaheen Afridi. Two of the world’s leading fast bowlers, Bumrah and Afridi, boast remarkable records in the shortest format. Bumrah has taken 69 wickets in 58 matches while Afridi has scored 47 runs in 40. Both the fast bowlers are equally effective with the new ball as well as in the death overs.
Ponting also had a hard time choosing one, stating in the ICC review: “Look, how do you split those two guys? They are among the best bowlers in the world over the years across all formats of the game.” There are two.”
Eventually, Ponting settled for the seasoned campaigner in Bumrah. “I would probably go on experience alone – I would go for Bumrah. He has played a lot of cricket in Australia now, played more in Australia than Afridi and played more major tournaments than Afridi,” he added.
Ponting was also asked to choose between the two most consistent openers in the world – Babar Azam and Jos Buttler.
Babar has scored 2,138 runs in 80 matches, while Butler has scored 1,562 runs in 94 matches.
“Babar Azam, technically he is a better player than Butler. You look at his strike-rate and there is no comparison, Buttler is a lot more dynamic, more 360-degree player than Babar,” Ponting said. Ponting said.
“Buttler has played more cricket with England in Australia and he has spent some time in the Big Bash with Sydney Thunder. So I’m going to go to Jos Buttler on that,” Ponting said.
