Dubai: 6-time world champion MC Mary Kom suffered disappointment at the Asian Boxing Championships on Sunday. He lost to Nazim Kiziba of Kazakhstan in the final of the 51 kg village weight category and had to be satisfied with the silver medal.
Mary Kom was defeated by a split decision of 2-3 in this close match. He, however, achieved his 7th medal of the tournament. This veteran player won his first medal in the Asian Championship in the year 2003. The 38-year-old Indian boxer started a good counter-attack in the first round against a player who was 11 years younger than him.

The Kazakhstan boxer, however, played a strong game in the second round and was successful in punching the jaws of Mary Kom accurately. Mary Kom returned in the last three minutes but could not impress the judges. The player from Manipur received $ 5000 (about 3.6 lakh rupees) as prize money and Kjaibe got 10,000 (about 7.2 lakh rupees).
On 31 May, defending champions Amit Phanghal (52 kg), Shiva Thapa (64 kg) and Sanjeet (91 kg) will play in the men’s gold medal. In the final, Panghal will face Rio Olympic gold medalist and current world champion Uzbekistan boxer Zirov Shakhobidin, while Assam boxer Thapa will take on Asian Games silver medalist Batsukh Chinjorig of Mongolia. Sanjeet will face Vasily Levitt, who will enter the ring with his fourth gold target of the Asian Championship.
8 Indian boxers Simranjit Kaur (60 kg), Vikas Krishna (69 kg), Lavlina Borgohain (69 kg), Jasmine (57 kg), Sakshi Chaudhary (64 kg), Monika (48 kg), Sweety (81 kg) and Varinder Singh (60 kg) had to face defeat in the semi-finals. All of them have won $ 2,500 for the country with a bronze medal as a prize.
