Ramkumar Ramanathan loses second singles against Norway, Indian team’s defeat in Davis Cup

The Indian team is looking at a heavy defeat in their Davis Cup World Group I first round encounter, giving hosts Norway a 0-2 lead after Ramkumar Ramanathan’s loss to Viktor Durasovic in the second singles at Lillehammer, Norway. India’s number one singles player Ramkumar did not live up to the expectations as he suffered a 1-6, 4-6 loss to his lower-order rival Durasovic in an hour and 16 minutes on Friday night. After losing 1-6 4-6 to world No. 2 and US Open runner-up Casper Roode 1-6 4-6 in Prajnesh Gunneswaran’s expected result in the first singles, Ramkumar had the responsibility to level India by winning the second match.

But it was not as if Ramkumar, ranked 276th in the world, was no match for 325th-ranked Durasovic, who broke Ramkumar’s serve three more times than his three Indian rival at the Hackens Hall hard court indoor facility. Send 12 aces down.

Durasovic dropped five aces in the first set while Ramkumar’s serve was broken twice. In the first set, Ramkumar managed to level his first serve at 1-1, but after that it was Dursovic all the way. Ramkumar also had two double faults which made things worse for him as Durasovic took the first set with ease.

Ramkumar tried to make a comeback in the second set but failed to catch his second service game to give Durasovic a 2-1 lead. The Indians failed to break Durasovic’s serve as the Norwegian scored seven aces. Leading 5–4, Durasovic blocked his serve to end the match.

Earlier on Friday, in the first singles, World No. 2 Casper Roode was expectedly too good for India’s Prajnesh Gunneswaran, giving Norway a 1-0 lead.

Rudd, who finished runner-up at the US Open after losing to Carlos Alcaraz on Monday, returned to national duty four days later and worked for his team. He defeated the 335-ranked Indian 6-1, 6-4 in one hour and two minutes.

After being completely dismissed in the first set, Prajnesh raised his game in the second set to make Rood’s task more difficult. While the Indian failed to score a break point, his more skilled opponent converted three of the five chances he got.

Yuki Bhambri and Saket Myneni will take on Rood and Durasovic in doubles on the second day. Ramkumar will face Rood while Prajnesh will face Durasovic in the reverse singles to be played on Saturday.
