Southampton: Team India’s senior spinner Ravichandran Ashwin feels that Saqlain Mushtaq was the only spinner to bowl a ‘valid second’ ball during his career and he wants the ICC to bend the current elbow. The 15 degree limit should be removed and allowed to reach the acceptable level.
Talk on ‘Second’
Ravichandran Ashwin spoke in detail about this dangerous delivery of off-spinners during a discussion with former South Africa ‘Performance’ analyst Prasanna Agoram. Saqlain opened the ‘doosra’ bowling and ‘Rang Un’ bowling included Muttiah Muralitharan, Harbhajan Singh and Saeed Ajmal.
‘Doosra’ should not be scrapped: Ashwin
In a discussion with Agoram on his Tamil YouTube channel show ‘The Legend of the Second’, Ashwin said, “According to me, we should not finish it (doosra) but give the spinners the second ball responsibly with proper bend of the elbow. Should be able to throw.
‘allow up to 15 degrees’
Ashwin said, ‘There should not be any kind of violation in this. Everyone should be allowed to bowl with a turn of 15 degrees or 20-22 degrees. Agoram wants the ICC to increase the elbow bend limit to 15 degrees and also that spinners should bowl the second ball responsibly.
‘Ballers also need freedom’
Ashwin said, ‘I want equal balance between bat and ball. Bowlers also need freedom like batsmen. In this way the competition can be better. I want to see bowlers defending the score of 125 runs in T20 cricket. This is the bottom line.’
Advice to ICC
Prasanna Agoram said, ‘But in some cases when the action of the umpires is only for the second, I want the ICC to reduce the bend of this elbow to 18.6 degrees. If bowlers are allowed to bowl second, then competition (between batsmen and bowlers) should be considered.
Ashwin praises Saqlain
Ravichandran Ashwin also said that former Pakistan spinner Saqlain Mushtaq was the only bowler to bowl the second ball beautifully legitimately. According to him, another spinner to throw a valid second is Shoaib Malik who started concentrating more on his batting.
