The Asia Cup 2022 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) saw an overwhelming trend in favor of teams chasing, making it important to win the toss in the final. Things were already in Pakistan’s favor when Babar Azam called it right and opted to field. Things got worse for Sri Lanka when they were reduced to 58/5 in the 9th over. But since then, an inspired performance from Bhanuka Rajapakse, Vanindu Hasaranga, Pramod Madushan and fielding took them a comfortable victory over Pakistan to clinch their sixth Asia Cup title.

Sri Lanka dismissed Pakistan for 147 and won the match by 23 runs.

Of the 11 matches played in the tournament prior to the final, the team batting first had won only three times.

Two of them were when India and Pakistan beat Hong Kong and the other was when Virat Kohli’s century gave India a major victory over a tired Afghanistan side that was playing back-to-back.

Sri Lankan captain Dasun Shanaka admitted at the toss that his side was against being put to bat, but said then that they could still win.

After the match he said that the IPL 2021 final was on the team’s mind, when Chennai Super Kings batted first and won.

“In IPL 2021, Chennai won the match batting first and that’s what was on my mind. These youngsters know the conditions really well. Vanindu made a huge impact losing five wickets. Chamika and DDS also did really well batted. A six off the last ball was the turning point. 170 was the difference mentally, as 160 always felt worth the chase. As a youngster, we knew Madushanka would do well, and as a captain We had to support him,” Shanaka said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

IPL 2021 was also played in the United Arab Emirates and the teams batting second had even more wins in that edition of India’s premier T20 tournament.

But CSK batted first and defeated Kolkata Knight Riders in the final match.
