New Delhi: Cricket may be called ‘Gentleman’s game’, but this game has a long history of controversies. 22 years ago, such a case came to the fore which created panic in the cricket world. South Africa player Makhaya Ntini was accused of such an allegation, due to which his career was threatened.

In January 1999, former South African fast bowler Makhaya Ntini was arrested from the city of East London and produced in court. Antony was accused of raping a 21-year-old female student at the cricket stadium on December 1, 1998.

Antony gave the girl a lift
Makhaya Ntini had claimed in court that he had given the girl a lift in his car during a storm and landed at the Buffalo Park cricket ground in East London where he had to borrow a player. Had to return the money. The girl alleged in the court that she was raped in the toilet of Antony Stadium.
Had to eat jail air
Makhaya Ntini was selected in South Africa’s team for the 1999 World Cup, but after this allegation, he was shown the way out of the team. In his place, Alan Dawson was included in the squad. Antony was convicted by the lower court, due to which he had to face jail.
Makhaya Ntini had to struggle a lot to prove himself innocence, but his struggle did not last long. In October 1999, the Grahamstown High Court overturned the lower court’s decision and Antony Bazzat was acquitted.
Strong return to international cricket
Makhaya Ntini returned to international cricket after this. He took 390 wickets in 101 ODIs for South Africa. He has 266 wickets in 173 ODIs. He has played only 10 T20 International matches. His last match (T20I) was against India when MS Dhoni was the captain of Team India.
