New Delhi: Legendary spinner Muttiah Muralitharan said he was not afraid to bowl to Sachin Tendulkar as he did not harm him like Virender Sehwag or Brian Lara. Muralitharan, the highest wicket-taker in international cricket, said that among the current batsmen, India’s Virat Kohli and Pakistan’s Babar Azam could have faced him better.
Murli was not afraid of Sachin
In a conversation with Aakash Chopra on ESPNcricinfo, Muralitharan said, ‘I was not afraid to bowl to Sachin because he didn’t hurt you a lot. He was the opposite of Sehwag who can hurt you. He (Sachin) used to keep his wicket. He understood the ball very well and he knew the technique.
Muralitharan, the bowler who took 800 wickets in Test cricket, said, ‘During my career, I felt that off-spin was a minor weakness of Sachin. He used to score crisp shots on leg spin but he used to have some trouble playing off spin because I got him out many times. Apart from this, many off-spinners got him out many times. I have seen it.’
‘It was not easy to get Sachin out’
Muraleedharan said, ‘I don’t know. I never spoke to him about why you don’t feel comfortable playing off-spin. I think he has a slight weakness and that’s why I have a slight advantage over the other players. However, getting Sachin out was not easy. Muralitharan also took 530 wickets in ODIs. He dismissed Tendulkar 13 times in his career.
Appreciation for Sehwag
He also praised Sehwag and Lara and said that both of them were the most dangerous batsmen he bowled against in his career. Muralitharan said, ‘Sehwag was extremely dangerous. For him, we kept fielders near the boundary line because we knew he would see an opportunity to play long shots. He knew that when he had his day, he could attack anyone. Regarding the players of the present day, he said, ‘Kohli is a good player of spin, especially in Test cricket. Babar Azam also looks like a good batsman.
