Tokyo Olympics: Deepak Punia’s dream shattered, lost bronze medal in last 10 seconds


New Delhi: Indian wrestler Deepak Punia’s dream has been shattered in the Tokyo Olympics. Deepak Punia suffered a 2-4 loss at the hands of Miles Amin of San Marino in the men’s freestyle 86kg bronze medal bout.

Deepak had lost to David Taylor of America in the semi-final match on Wednesday, but Deepak was expected to win the bronze medal. However, with this defeat, the hope of bringing bronze from him also got shattered. In the bronze medal match, Deepak scored the first two points in the first period but Amin also scored one point. With this, Deepak remained heavy on Amin in the first period and took a 2-1 lead.

In the second period, Amin came back to collect two points to take a 3-2 lead. After this, he again picked up a point after beating Deepak and won the match by taking a 4-2 lead and won the bronze medal. Deepak could not maintain his early lead and his journey in the Tokyo Olympics ended here.

Indian wrestler Deepak Poonia made a blistering entry into the quarter-finals of the Tokyo Olympics after defeating Nigerian wrestler Ekrekem Egiomor 12-1 in the first round of men’s freestyle wrestling 86kg category. Deepak dominated the Nigerian wrestler in this entire match. Deepak scored 4 points in the first round and 8 points in the second round. Deepak Punia’s quarter-final match will be with Chinese wrestler Jushen Lin.

After taking a 3-1 lead in the first round, Deepak Poonia did not allow the Nigerian wrestler to take a single point against him in the second round.

Ravi Kumar Dahiya won silver

Indian wrestler Ravi Kumar Dahiya did wonders in Tokyo Olympics. Ravi of Haryana won the silver medal for the country in the 57 kg wrestling category. Ugayev took two points in the first period of the final match. But Ravi immediately made a comeback and scored two points. However, Ugayev then took a 4-2 lead with two points. After this, Ugayev also took a point in the second period. Then Ugayev scored two more points to make the score 7-2. However, Ravi once again made a comeback and reduced the gap by collecting two points. But his efforts were not enough to win the match and he had to be content with the silver medal with this defeat.
