He told, ‘Later, Rohit told me,’ I believed that you are doing a great job for the team right now, and instead of thinking about that (not being a selection), you just do the same things. Stay what you have been doing in this IPL from day one. And when the time is right, you will get a chance. Whether it is today or tomorrow, it will happen, you just have to believe in yourself.
Even in the domestic season before IPL, Suryakumar has been doing consistently well for a few years but still he did not get a chance in the Indian team. He said that those words of Rohit helped him come out of despair. He said, ‘I was feeling really good because I knew how I was feeling at that time before he spoke. He could see it clearly in my eyes. I think he helped me in getting out of this disappointment.
The 30-year-old Mumbai batsman admitted that the selection of the team for the Australian tour was on his mind. However, to keep the mind from wandering, he had to separate some things from himself. The middle order batsman said, ‘I was a bit disappointed during the tournament. I knew that the team had to be selected that day. I was trying to keep myself busy and did not want to let the selection things come in my mind.
When Suryakumar saw that his name was not included in the list, he was very disappointed. He said, ‘I sat in a room and started thinking, why is not my name, but after looking at the team, it felt that there are many players in it who have got lot of runs in Indian team and IPL.’
He said, ‘Then I felt that instead of thinking these things, I should do my work which is to score continuously. This is in my hands. And when you get a chance, adopt it with both hands. He played a key role in making Mumbai Indians champions for the 5th time. He said, ‘When the tournament started, I felt that more important than scoring more runs, how can I help the team win?’
