Originally the first match of this tournament was to be played on 14 September 1996 but due to rain it took 2 days for the series to start and the match was played on September 16 in Torrento. Actually, the rain did not stop on 16 September and due to the wet outfield, the match was reduced from 50-50 overs to 33-33 overs per innings.
In the first ODI between India and Pakistan played on the American continent, Pakistan scored 170 runs losing 9 wickets in 33 overs. For India, fast bowlers Javagal Srinath and Anil Kumble took 3-3 wickets, while fast bowler Venkatesh Prasad also took 2 wickets. Chasing the target, the Indian team scored 173 runs in just 29.5 overs and won the match by 8 wickets. For the team, Sachin Tendulkar played a strong knock of 89 off 89 balls and played a key role in the team’s victory. Apart from this, Rahul Dravid scored 39 runs.
With this victory, Sachin Tendulkar-led Team India took a 1-0 lead in the Sahara Cup. However, Pakistan won 3–2 in this series. Let me tell you that this series was to be played for 5 consecutive years, but after playing it for 3 years from 1996 to 1998, it stopped being held. In 1999, in view of the ongoing infiltration from Pakistan in Kashmir, Sahara pulled out its hands as a sponsor and the series was stopped.
