Melbourne: Legendary batsman Ricky Ponting believes that all-rounder Marcus Stoinis is playing ‘5 times better’ than he was a year ago and he can play ‘many roles’ in Australian cricket, including a ‘finisher’. Stoinis recently took 13 wickets during the IPL 20202 in the UAE, scoring 352 runs for Delhi Capitals, whose coach was Ponting.

Stoinis is in the Australian team for the ODI and T20 series starting on November 27 against India. Ponting said that Alex Carrie told about the great change that Stoinis had during the IPL. Ponting said, “He arrived for the IPL in which he came straight from England, he was very keen to show the improvements he had made in himself, and only after his first few net sessions I could tell.”
He said, ‘After spending a lot of time with him for the last 2 years, when I saw him in the IPL, I felt that he had become five times better than 12 months ago.’
The 31-year-old Stoinis was dropped from Australia’s T20 squad after a disappointing performance in the 50-over World Cup last year. But he made a successful comeback thanks to his brilliant performance playing for the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League, in which he added 705 runs in a single season as well as scoring the tournament’s best individual unbeaten 147 runs.
Ponting said that Stoinis has proved himself as a finisher but believes that he should start the innings. Ponting said, ‘I think for Delhi or whatever team they play in T20 cricket, for that they should play in the top order. I think he can play (finishing role). I think he has proved that he can now play many different roles.
He said, ‘And I think the more responsibility he is given in the white ball team, the better he will be. See what happens against India in the next few weeks. But if he gets the right opportunity in this, then I think he will impress everyone ‘.
