India’s Vinesh Phogat created history at the World Wrestling Championships in Belgrade on Wednesday as she joined an elite list of Indian wrestlers to have won multiple medals in the marquee event. She won the bronze medal by defeating Emma Malmgren of Sweden 8-0. This was his second medal at the World Championships. She had earlier won a bronze medal in the 2019 edition as well. Triple Commonwealth Games champion Vinesh is the first Indian female wrestler to win two medals at the World Championships.

Khulan Bakhuyag entered the final by winning his next match, giving Vinesh the bronze medal. However, the road was not easy for Vinesh as she had to win three repechage round matches on her way to win a medal.

In her first repechage match on Wednesday, she beat 2018 Asian Games silver medalist Zuldiz Ashimov of Kazakhstan 4-0. He conquered by fall (VFA). In her next match she won on a win by injury (VIN) basis against Leyla Gurbanova of Azerbaijan. After winning this match, he stepped into the bronze medal match.

Also 2021 World Under-23 bronze medalist Nisha Dahiya will fight for the bronze medal. Nisha defeated Bulgaria’s Sofia Hiristova Georgieva to enter the semi-finals. He won 11-0 on the basis of superiority aka technical fall (VSU).
