Kantar said that 74 percent of customers in the US showed interest in buying a 5G phone. This percentage is actually lower than the customer base in China looking for models based on next-generation network technology. However, the firm said that 5G capability in the Chinese market remained almost straight year-on-year as a reason for purchases, with one in five buyers preferring 5G to the phone.
“70 percent of the top 10 models sold in China are 5G enabled,” said Jennifer Chan, director of Kantar Consumer Insights. “In Japan it is 60 per cent; in both the US and Australia it is 50 per cent, and in the European Union 5 (Great Britain, Germany, France, Italy and Spain) it is 40 per cent.
On the sales front, Kantar found that Samsung’s sales in Australia and the US grew by four percentage points and accounted for over 30 percent of total sales in the second quarter of 2021. However, Samsung’s sales were still lagging behind iPhone sales.
iOS share in the US and China has increased by two percentage points every year. However, this was not the trend in Japan, where Android sales grew five percent due to strong performances from Sharp and Oppo.
Kantar also found that in the US as well as Britain, France, Italy and Spain, channel shares for in-store sales rose at least 10 percentage points year-over-year in the second quarter. This shows that more people prefer to buy phones through physical stores rather than online.
The rollout of COVID-19 vaccination along with the opening of businesses and easing of restrictions is believed to be among the key reasons for the growth of in-store purchases of smartphones.
It also found that in-store smartphone buyers in the US, Australia and Japan were more likely to agree that they prefer to buy brands they are familiar with.
