Railways has abandoned a project to provide internet connection in trains as it did not seem cost-effective. The government informed the Parliament about this on Wednesday. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav in a written reply to a question in Lok Sabha said that Wi-Fi based internet facility through satellite communication technology was provided in Howrah Rajdhani Express train as a pilot project.

“This technology was very capital consuming with recurring cost in the form of bandwidth charges and thus not cost effective. Also, the internet bandwidth availability for the passengers was inadequate. Hence, the project was abandoned,” he said. was given. Presently, suitable cost-effective technology for provision of Wi-Fi based internet services in trains is not available.”

Former Railway Minister Piyush Goyal had said in 2019 that the Center is planning to provide Wi-Fi service in trains in the next four to four-and-a-half years. At present, Wi-Fi facility is being provided by Indian Railways at no cost to national transporters on self-sustainable basis at more than 6,000 stations. This facility is being provided with the help of RailTel, a Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) under the Ministry of Railways.

At present, India is moving fast in the field of adoption of digital services and facilities like Digital India campaign. Now not only a fixed place but a person on the way also needs the facility of internet. Hence the availability of internet connection during long train journey has also become the need of the hour. But at present, this dream of passengers getting Wi-Fi facility in the moving train does not seem to be coming true.
