What does a dying star look like, NASA explained with pictures

The US space agency NASA has shared an image captured by its Hubble Space Telescope of a nebula, which looks like a deep tunnel in space. This nebula was born due to a dying star, named HD 44179 and this star has been separating its outer layers for about 14000 years. Notably, this star is similar to the Sun, but it is dying and therefore releasing gas and other material into the universe, which give it a very different shape. The star is surrounded by an amazing structure known as the red rectangle.

However, in pictures taken by the Hubble Telescope, this nebula appears in an “X” shape, in which colorful lines of bright gas are visible. NASA wrote on Instagram that this nebula shines like a lighthouse in our Milky Way. Red Rectangle This nebula is located about 2300 light-years away from Earth in the constellation Monoceros, which in Latin means ‘unicorn.’ According to NASA, it can turn into a nebula planet in a few million years.

According to the European Space Agency, this nebula was first discovered during a rocket flight in the early 1970s. Astronomers were then searching for strong sources of infrared radiation. The name Red Rectangle was given by astronomers Martin Cohen and Mike Merrill in 1973. It was only after this that Hubble revealed the X shape of the nebula. The Hubble Space Telescope was jointly launched by NASA and the European Space Agency.

The light emanating from the Red Rectangular Nebula is also somewhat strange. There is something in this star, which is blocking the star’s atmosphere from uniform expansion. Because of this, at present it remains a hot topic for research as well. The Hubble Telescope was launched into space in April 1990. Since then it has captured many great pictures of deep space.
