TechCrunch, citing data from Sensor Tower, reported that Telegram surpassed one billion downloads worldwide last week. Other apps on this list include Telegram’s arch-rival WhatsApp, as well as Messenger, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Spotify, and Netflix.
Sensor Tower reported that India emerged as the largest Internet market for Telegram. After Telegram came into existence, it has 22 percent downloads in India alone. Russia and Indonesia were the two major markets for the app, followed by India, where it received 10 percent and eight percent of its total installs, respectively. It is important to note that the number of installs reported by Sensor Tower does not reflect the active users of the app. However, Telegram said last year that it had around 500 million monthly active users.
Earlier this month, business journal Nikkei Asia reported that Telegram became the seventh most downloaded app globally in 2020, citing data from analytics platform App Annie. Gadgets 360 has tried to contact Telegram for comment on the download achievement and will update this news when the company responds.
