Zimbabwe is also moving towards Bitcoin adoption, talks are going on with private companies

The government of Zimbabwe is also moving towards legalizing bitcoin. There are reports that the Zimbabwean government is considering adopting bitcoin as a legal payment option along with the Zimbabwean dollar. The South African country’s head of e-government technology, Charles Vaquet, has revealed that discussions are underway with private sector players to legalize bitcoin payments. However, he did not say when the Zimbabwean government could take a final decision on the subject.

According to Wekwete, the government fears that notorious people may misuse cryptocurrencies to facilitate money laundering and fund other illegal activities that can be very difficult to detect.

A report by Zimbabwean news portal Bulawayo24 quoted a top official as saying that the government is still trying to understand it (cryptocurrency) properly. He has said that we are trying to understand its implications, because there are apprehensions about many things including cross-border movement of money, money laundering. Suggestions of private sector people and companies have been invited regarding the adoption of bitcoin in the country.

Earlier this year El Salvador became the first country in the world to legalize bitcoin. Now news of Zimbabwe following the path of El Salvador and adopting cryptocurrency has sparked discussions on Twitter as well.
