Apple delays in-app account removal requirement, extends in-app purchase exception to June 30


Apple has extended the deadline to provide developers with an in-app account removal mechanism until June 30. Last year, Apple announced that developers publishing their apps through the App Store would have to provide users with a way to delete their accounts. This notably isn’t the first time Apple has decided to delay its new rules, as the company did something similar in the past with its app tracking transparency feature. This feature was to be implemented from September 2020, but it was launched in April last year.

With the extension given in terms of account deletion enforcement, Apple has increased its revision of its app guidelines that loosen in-app purchase requirements in specific cases. These are primarily for apps that cater to users with person-to-person services between two individuals, such as tutoring students, medical consultations, real estate tours and fitness training, among others.

“We defied App Store Review Guideline 3.1.1, which requires apps offering paid online group services to do so through in-app purchases,” the company said. “Given the recent resurgence of COVID and its continued impact on in-person services, we have extended the most recent deadline to June 30, 2022.”

Apple initially made that amendment public in September 2020 to relax commissions from in-app purchases through the App Store. The temporary change was announced after experiencing an outage from developers over App Store practices. It was later extended throughout 2021.
