Google News Showcase, Germany’s Federal Cartel Office being investigated for use of personal data


Germany’s federal cartel office said it was investigating Google’s use of personal data and its Google News Showcase product as part of its new powers to regulate Internet companies, and linked Amazon, Apple and Facebook owners Meta. was also looking into the matter.

The regulator said Wednesday that it has determined that Google owner Alphabet met the scale limit required for a company to be subject to newly expanded supervisory powers to regulate large Internet companies it acquired last year. .

“The federal cartel office can now deal with concrete forms of behavior that harm competition,” the office’s president, Andreas Mund, said. “We have already begun to look more deeply at Google’s processing of personal data and the topic of the Google News Showcase.”

He said the federal cartel office was also looking into other matters involving Amazon, Apple and Facebook’s owner Meta.

The Office began looking at Google’s use of personal data in May last year and a selection of news stories offered under the Google News Showcase in June.
