Disney’s D23 Expo: The Little Mermaid, Inside Out 2, Mufasa: The Lion King, and more

Disney’s annual event, the D23 Expo, kicks off Saturday to showcase all future projects. The assembly, held at the Anaheim Convention Center, was streamed live on multiple online platforms, along with announcements from Disney, Pixar and Marvel. D23 is scheduled to run for three days until September 11, during which fans get to experience iconic sets from various Disney media in person. Meanwhile, more trailers are coming to the housemates. Highlights include a special announcement for The Little Mermaid, Amy Adams-led Disenchanted and Barry Jenkins’s The Lion King sequel.

The Little Mermaid Trailer

Release date: May 26, 2023

At the D23 Expo, Disney finally offered Halle Bailey a first look as Ariel, the Little Mermaid, swimming along the underwater cliffs of Atlantica. Rob Marshall – best known for Mary Poppins Returns – directed the live-action remake from a script written by David Magee (Life of Pi). The brief teaser only touches on aspects of world-building as Ariel sings the iconic “Part of Your World,” hoping to escape into the lands above. You can also watch Flounder, who will be voiced by Jacob Tremblay (Luca).

Nearly 15 years after the original film, Gisele Phillips (Adams), Disney’s live-action princess is back with a sequel. Leaving her “happily after” past behind, she moves to a suburb, only to be overwhelmed by real-world problems that are the exact opposite of her fairy tale life. As temptation sets in, she aspires to a cynical lifestyle, gradually reducing family members to pawns who obey her. The spell is reversed, putting Giselle in a race against time and freeing herself from the illusion.

Amy Poehler (Parks and Recreation) made an appearance at the D3 Expo to announce the sequel to the Academy Award-winning Inside Out. The Pixar film stars Riley as a teenager to deal with the whirlwind of complex emotions that come with adolescence. Obviously, the film will include new anthropomorphic emotions that wreak havoc inside his head, in addition to the existing five – joy, sadness, fear, disgust and anger.

Mufasa: The Lion King

Release date: 2024
Where: Cinemas

The prequel to the 2019 “live-action” adaptation of The Lion King will be released sometime in 2024. Directed by Barry Jenkins (Moonlight), the film is officially titled “Mufasa: The Lion King” and follows the rise of the lion cub. Ruler of the land of glory. Disney didn’t reveal any new details about this, except that Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen (Superbad) would reprise the roles of Timon and Pumbaa, respectively.

Hoax 2 Trailer

The Sanderson Sisters – a trio of witches – are on their way back to Salem, hunting down a group of teenage girls who inadvertently woke them from a long slumber. Hocus Pocus 2 reunites the cast of the original 1993 film – Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker (Sex and the City) and Kathy Najimi, who now explore the modernity of the city, scouring convenience stores, flying on hoverboards and make a grand display at the Halloween festivities.

Skydance New Media’s Untitled Marvel Game

Set in the World War II era of Paris, this untitled Marvel game pits Captain America and Black Panther against each other. Amy Hennig, best known for writing and directing Uncharted Games, leads development through her Skydance New Media studio. The teaser doesn’t reveal much other than some confidential Hydra documents and the involvement of the four main characters, an unnamed member of Wakanda and what looks like a standard heavy-booted soldier.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns release date

Release date: December 2
Platforms: PC, PS5, Xbox Series S/X

After several delays, Marvel’s Midnight Suns, the upcoming tactical role-playing title, finally has a solid launch date. From the creators of XCOM, the game is set in the deep, supernatural realm of the Marvel universe, with players tasked with assembling a faction and ending the evil deeds of Lilith, the Mother of Demons.

At D23 Expo, the studio revealed some more gameplay footage, highlighting the turn-based combat system and choice-based dialogue options. Marvel’s Midnight Sons hosts a host of iconic characters from The Avengers, X-Men, Runaways, and more.

Peter Pan and Wendy

From acclaimed genre filmmaker, David Lowery (The Green Knight), comes Peter Pan & Wendy, a live-action remake of the original 1953 animated film. At the D23 Expo, we got the 2023 release window and an official poster for the same, which offers a glimpse of Neverland. The film stars Alexander Moloney as Peter, Evers Anderson as storyteller Wendy, Jude Law (Sherlock Holmes) as the evil Captain Hook, and Alyssa Wapantahak as native Tiger Lily. Similar to the one recently led by Tom Hanks pinocchio The film, Peter Pan and Wendy, will go live streaming.
