Truecaller is a popular app that shows you the contact details of unknown numbers calling you. It crowdsources contact details from the address books of all its users. So even if you’ve never used the service, your name and number may be in Truecaller’s database thanks to someone else who saved your contact details and allowed the app to access them.
Not everyone knows this, but for some fixed-line phones, Truecaller lists landline addresses as well. It doesn’t make sense when telemarketers or spammers call from an office address, but ideally you don’t want strangers to know your home address just because you called them from your landline. Of course Truecaller gets this data from public data sources. This is because if someone knows your landline number, they can find the registered address in any publicly available phonebook (many telecommunications companies have this information public) or even just by searching your landline number on Google. can be obtained easily.
For this reason you should consider deleting your number from Truecaller’s database. Note that you cannot remove your number from the service if you are using the app. You must deactivate your account to remove your number. We removed our mobile number about a year ago, but a few days ago it started appearing in the service again, although we have never used Truecaller. Your best bet is to keep checking with Truecaller users to see if they see your contact details. If they don’t, you are good to go. If not, you can always ask them to unlist your number.
