Twitter says its site is being banned in Russia amid Ukraine crisis

Twitter is being banned for certain users in Russia, the social media company said in a tweet on Saturday, February 26.

On Friday, a day after Russia invaded Ukraine, Moscow said it was partially limiting Facebook’s access to meta platforms it accuses of “censoring” Russian media.

Twitter said it is working to keep its service secure and accessible. It did not immediately respond to questions about whether Russia had communicated with the company about any action.

Russia has been trying to tighten controls on the Internet and big tech companies for years, critics say threatens personal and corporate freedoms and is part of a broader crackdown against vocal opponents of the Kremlin.

Last year, Moscow slammed Twitter in a punitive move because it said the site was not removing illegal content.
